What Does an Air Purifier Cost to Run? Filters and Electricity

The price tag is only part of what an air purifier costs. If it runs all day — which is how purifiers work best — you'll also pay for replacement filters and electricity every year. Over three years, those can add up to more than the purifier itself.

Filters: the big cost

Most purifiers use a HEPA filter, often combined with a carbon layer for odors. Brands typically recommend replacing it every 6 to 12 months, depending on the model and how dirty your air is. Filter prices range from about $25 to over $100.

Yearly filter cost = filter price × (12 ÷ months between replacements)

A $30 filter that lasts 12 months costs $30 a year. A $60 filter replaced every 6 months costs $120 a year — for the same job.

Many newer purifiers track real usage and tell you when to change the filter, so actual intervals vary. Heavy smoke, pets or construction dust shorten filter life.

Electricity: usually small

Air purifiers draw between about 15 and 80 watts at full speed, and much less on low. On AirSheet we estimate electricity by assuming the purifier runs around the clock at about 40% of its maximum power — typical for auto or medium modes.

Compare the 3-year cost, not the price

Ways to cut running costs

• Size it right. An undersized purifier has to run on high all the time: louder, more power, faster filter wear.
• Vacuum the pre-filter. Many purifiers have a washable pre-filter that catches hair and lint before it clogs the main filter.
• Use auto mode if your purifier has an air-quality sensor, so it only works hard when it needs to.
• Buy filters in multi-packs or through subscriptions — brands often discount them 10–15%.
